Religious Studies at Rougemont is a subject that is relevant to the present day and as such is interesting and stimulating to the pupils. Religious ethics helps pupils develop clear and questioning minds about their lives and the lives of the greater population.
Because Religious ethics is at times so controversial, even at the lower level, discussion forms an essential part of the work from Year 7 right up to Year 13. In these discussions pupils learn to listen to and appreciate others’ points of view. We use set texts as a springboard for the pupils to broaden their research into subjects, for example, embryo research and living wills, but much of their research will be from the media, lectures and indeed life itself. The information that they find will then be looked at in the context of Christian, Islamic or Hindu ethics. The teaching is always topical and we integrate their research finding whenever possible. The subject also promotes individual learning, which, we believe is of benefit to pupils of all ages. Our aim in this subject is to turn out pupils who have a firm ethical stance and a ability to appreciate that while not everyone will have the same values, we all deserve to be able to voice our opinions.
