Mathematics

At Rougemont, we endeavour to engender a spirit of enjoyment of mathematics, as well as appreciating the intellectual challenges of the subject. Mathematics is compulsory up to GCSE level, but a large number of our pupils choose to extend their knowledge of the subject to AS and A level.

Our aims in the Mathematics department are to:

  • develop pupils’ mathematical knowledge and skills (oral, written and practical) in a manner which encourages confidence, enjoyment and perseverance
  • develop pupils’ familiarity with appropriate mathematical concepts, techniques and vocabulary
  • develop the ability to think logically, carry out calculations, solve problems and understand the significance of the results obtained
  • apply mathematics in everyday situations and develop pupils’ understanding and appreciation of the part which mathematics plays and has played in the world around them.

Pupils will follow the WJEC syllabus for both the Mathematics GCSE and A level, while the AQA syllabus is used for the Further Mathematics A level.
