Latin

Latin was reintroduced to the curriculum at Rougemont in 2007.It is a compulsory subject in Year 7 and in Year 8 about two-thirds of the year continue with it.In Year 9 it becomes an optional subject.

Studying Latin develops awareness of the linguistic roots of English and of many European languages as well.It also develops habits of accuracy and attention to detail. We use the Cambridge Latin Course – a beautifully-illustrated modern course which concentrates on helping pupils to read large amounts of Latin fluently and confidently. The course also includes a lot of excellent background information about Roman civilisation and history. Latin appeals to pupils whose interests lie principally in maths and the sciences as well as to those who are drawn to modern languages and the humanities. The Cambridge Latin Course maintains an excellent website with many supplementary activities and games: www.cambridgescp.com .
