Transition from year 4 to year 5

The transition from year 4 to year 5 is an exciting time for our Junior School pupils. Having been nurtured by their class teachers throughout their first two years in the juniors, they are spring boarded into a whole new world.

The pupils in Years 5 and 6 are taught by enthusiastic specialist teachers and so the children are faced with the challenge of meeting new staff, who are specific to their subject. Subject teachers make a big impact on the pupils and they begin to develop stronger preferences as to their favourite subjects. The children themselves tell us that this is the most exciting change during this time of transition.

Form tutors continue to be responsible for the pastoral welfare of the children and are they are in regular daily contact with the class. They are also the first contact point for parents who may have queries regarding school.

Homework also takes on a new form as a specific homework timetable is issued to the children at the start of the year. Each subject teacher will give homework, usually once a week, which relates to work covered in class. With new subjects being taught, the pupils rise to the challenge of this with gusto. Organisation is key to managing this increased homework load and Form Tutors work alongside subject teachers to support the children and sometimes their parents!

At the start of the first term in year 5, we hold a Year 5 ‘At Home’ which gives an opportunity for the children to introduce their parents to their new teachers. The enthusiasm displayed by the children demonstrates how positive they are about their learning and their school and we are proud to be part of the next phase of their education.
