Summer Term 2012 Chess News
Well done to all who played in the South Wales Megafinal here at Rougemont, where nearly two hundred children were competing. To take part in the Megafinal players have to qualify via a Spring Term competition in their schools, with the top 35% making the grade for this elite event.
These were great results; with five players achieving the 4 points [out of 6] needed to go through to the British Gigafinal in Derby in July 2012. A great day for Rougemont!
Gigafinalists as follows:
Xavier Clason-Morgan 2nd & Davey Regan 3rd
Anna-Lena Barth [Suprema]
Under 12 boys
Rhys & Owen Bennett
Well done too to Sam Edwards, Elliot Church, Megan Vineall, Jessica Sweeney, Isaac Bradford, Laura Gilchrist & Jason Pinto in the youngest category. Benjamin Edwards & Megan Burridge were unlucky not to qualify.
I am proud of you all! Mr.Thomas.
Under 11 girls
Welsh Junior girls’ Championships
15th January 2012
Hosted by Inglefield House –Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls Junior Department - this important chess event again recorded a very high number of entries from around the country. Among them were two girls from Rougemont playing a full day of chess in the various age categories – one of them taking 3rd place!
The U11s was a closely-fought section, and here Anna-Lena Barth was a determined competitor and a worthy winner of the 3rd place trophy. The U10s was by far the biggest section and here Megan Burridge played some of the best chess of her career, and was very unlucky not to pick up a trophy. Congratulations to both for taking part.
Coach Mr Thomas is hoping to see many more Rougemont players taking part in the 2012 Welsh Junior Chess Championships – to be hosted at Rougemont on the 3rd and 4th of March.
