Newport Project, Outdoor week, Non-Fiction- Blue Whale, Olympics,Dinosaurs and Pirates
Spellings
Your child will bring home a list of spelling words to learn each week. It will be helpful if you can support this learning in any of the following ways:-
1. Point out letter patterns to aid both memory and understanding.
2. Help your child to sound out words and hear the constituent sounds within them.
3. Encourage the writing of the words a few at a time.
Use the ‘look, say, cover, write, check’ method that we use.
4. Develop your child’s ability to ‘have a go’ at spelling before asking for help.
5. Look at the shape of the word.
6. Look for ‘words within words’.
7. Praise good effort, especially if an error is a reasonable attempt, before correcting.
The spellings will be focused on in lesson time, together with the spelling pattern of the week and then brought home each Monday. The spelling test will be on Friday. As other homework is set throughout the week, it may be best to concentrate on learning these spellings on Monday and review them on other days.
Mathematics
The children will continue to develop mental strategies, learn tables, develop number, shape, time, measure and money skills.

Mental Maths Strategies
The following is a list of strategies that will be covered during the course of the entire year. Each week we will highlight the strategies taught.
Over the weekend, could you please choose one or two of the following strategies to consolidate with your child:-
Counting on and back in 1's, 2's and 10's
Number bonds to 10
2x table in order, and also random. See the first page of your child's big red homework book and over the weekend please revise the appropriate time tables as marked on the small square sheet.
To know that subtraction is the inverse of addition. 7+3=10,10-3=7
Understanding place value of 2 digit numbers,
eg. 53 is 5 tens and 3 units, so 53 = 50+3, also 50+3=53
Biggest number in your head and count on as an addition strategy.
Near doubles as an addition strategy
e.g. 5 + 6 can be calculated as double the smallest number and add 1 so 5 + 5 + 1 = 10 + 1 = 11
OR
double the biggest number and subtract 1 so 6 + 6 = 12 - 1 = 11
Add on 10 subtract 1 for a +9 addition calculation
e.g. 3 + 9 = 3 + 10 - 1 = 13 - 1 = 12
Add on 10 and add on 1 for a +11 addition calculation
e.g. 3 + 11 = 3 + 10 +1 = 13 + 1 = 14
Doubles of numbers to 20
Coins to make amounts to 20p, 50p and £1
e.g. 17p = 10p + 5p + 2p using real money
Addition of 2 or 3 prices to calculate the total
e.g. 14p + 13p = 27p using real money
Coins to make the total of 2 or 3 prices
e.g. 27p = 20p + 5p + 2p using real money
Change from 20p, 50p and £1 using real money
e.g. spent 17p, gave the shopkeeper 20p so change is calculated by counting on from 17p to 20p so 17p + 2p = 19p then 19p + 1p = 20p
Measuring household objects using metres and centimetres
O' clock and half-past on analogue and digital clocks
Names and properties of 2d shapes
Names and properties of 3d shapes
Measuring the mass of objects using standard units-100g, 200g
Lines of symmetry on 2D shapes.
Symmetrical patterns.
Halves and quarters of 2D shapes and numbers
Quarter to and quarter past
Reinforcement of mathematical language for Wednesday’s Folens Mental Maths test
Estimating and grouping in 10s.
multiplication and divsion by 2,3,4,5,10
data handling using lists, tables, pictograms, Venn diagrams and block graphs.
Sequencing numbers in 3s,4s,5s from any given number.
subtraction is the inverse of addition to solve missing number problems
Meaning of = sign: balance, same as, total, score, sum of, altogether, makes, equals, is
