The school belongs to the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO). All pupils in Year 11 have an opportunity to enrol in this organisation. Excellent termly bulletins are sent to parents for four years and regular advice is available to pupils. Also an abundance of literature on careers reaches the school where it is catalogued in the careers library. Pupils have easy access to this. The Senior Tutors help organise careers guidance and advice on Higher Education and we have a designated Careers Teacher.
Careers education begins in Year 9. During the course of this year, guidance is given with the aim of enabling pupils to choose the most suitable options for GCSE. This culminates in the Year 9 Conference which parents and pupils attend. Here teachers discuss GCSE option choices with individual pupils.
At the beginning of Year 11, pupils can join ISCO and then sit a series of aptitude tests and fill in an interest questionnaire, produced by ISCO, to help with their choice of career. After these have been processed, a careers guidance report is given to each pupil followed by an interview with one of the ISCO careers advisers. During this interview, the most appropriate AS/A2 level choices or other career paths are discussed. Pupils in Years 10 - 13 are also able to obtain careers advice from the Gwent Careers Service who give talks and conduct interviews in the school. There is also a Year 11 Conference which parents and pupils attend to meet teachers in order to discuss AS/A2 Level subjects.
In addition to the careers help and advice given to all pupils in Years 9 - 11, there are lectures for Sixth Form pupils at which speakers from a wide range of professions and backgrounds give information and advice to pupils.
Work Experience
All Year 11 pupils have the opportunity of one or two weeks' work experience after they have completed their GCSEs. The school has built up a network of local employers willing to take pupils, and the experience proves very beneficial for the majority of pupils who take part.
