Dyslexia Department

The Dyslexia Department at Rougemont is very much an integrated part of school life: clubs are run in the department (the Puzzle Club and the Photography Club) and members of the department also teach in other parts of the school. They even run the cross country!

The department is well equipped with computers and software, and has a range of resources aimed at maximising the potential of the pupils who come for lessons in the department. The department provides specialist teaching and sometimes assessment; advice for parents and children; liaison with other teachers and a place to come with any problems related to learning.

All members of the Dyslexia Department have specialist qualifications in dyslexia and literacy, and undertake regular professional development to keep up to date with research and with specialist teaching methods and resources.

Our pupils fall under the heading of ‘neurodiverse’, which encompasses a range of specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia.

Lessons in the department are scheduled after or before school, or a pupil may be withdrawn from one or two class or subject lessons a week. Pupils are encouraged to apply what they learn in the department in all areas of the curriculum. As with other specialist tuition within the school (such as instrumental music lessons, elocution and ballet) a separate charge is made for lessons in the Dyslexia Department.

The aim of the department is to help our pupils to become happy, confident, independent and successful learners who no longer need our support.
